MA interviews are finished!

I am happy to report that, in addition to getting to visit my New England family (including my adorable niece and nephews!) during a 10-day trip north this December, I was also able to complete the last 3 of my Massachusetts-based interviews!

I’m now working furiously on transcribing the interview recordings while amping up my recruitment efforts here in Texas. If you know any gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer parents of kids ages 10 and under who live in Texas, please refer them to the site…and if you are a gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer parent, and would like to find out about being interviewed for the project, click the “Contact Me” link above and I’ll be in touch!

Interviews being scheduled now in MA and TX

Thanks for visiting the LGBTQ Parenting Study site! For those of you interested in participating in the study, I am currently scheduling interviews in December in Massachusetts and in both December and January in Texas. I am hoping to wrap up the interview phase of this project by the end of January!

Want more info about the study? Here it is!

I am currently conducting research on LGBTQ parenting philosophies and practices, trying to find out more about how LGBTQ parents think about parenting their daughters and sons – their ideals and philosophies – how they go about putting these ideals into practice, and where they find (or don’t find) support as parents.

I am looking for LGBTQ couples in Massachusetts and Texas who are parents of children ages 10 and under to be interviewed for my research. Interviews will be about an hour to an hour and a half in length and will be confidential. As a queer woman and (hopeful) future parent, I have a strong interest in making sure that research on this topic is done to the highest standards to prevent misrepresentations of LGBTQ persons.
(This study was approved by the University of Texas IRB on 06/16/2011, IRB PROTOCOL #2011-05-0085.)

LGBTQ Parents Needed: Still Recruiting in Texas!

I’ve gotten so much great feedback about how exciting, how interesting, how necessary this study is for furthering conversations around LGBTQ parenting. But in order for this study to make any kind of impact, I need more participants!

Are you an LGBTQ parent in Texas? If you are, I want to hear your thoughts! I am still recruiting parents to participate in a 90-minute interview about your thoughts, beliefs, and experiences surrounding parenting. I’ll come to you, and everything you tell me will be anonymous and confidential – all it costs you is an hour and a half of your time!

You can participate if:

– You and your partner both identify as L, B, g, T, and/or Q.

– You have at least one child, and all your children are age 10 or younger.

– Your children were all born/adopted/brought into your family while you were in your current partner relationship.

– You and your partner are able to be interviewed together.

That’s it! You don’t need to travel, or to be near Austin – I can come to you. And you don’t need to know a whole lot about parenting, about sociology, or really about anything but your family and your unique experiences and perspectives.

Have questions? Want to participate? Know someone who might? Please contact me!

Participants Needed!

My name is Kate Averett and I am a graduate student in Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin.  This summer I am conducting research on LGBTQ parenting philosophies and practices. I am trying to find out how LGBTQ parents think about parenting their daughters and sons – their ideals and philosophies – how they go about putting these ideals into practice, and where they find (or don’t find) support as parents.

I am looking for LGBTQ couples who reside in Massachusetts or Texas and who are parents of children ages 10 and under to be interviewed for my research. Interviews will be about an hour to an hour and a half in length and will be confidential.  Both partners must be able to be interviewed together. If you are interested in participating or would like to find out more about the study, please email me at kate.averett (at) utexas (dot) edu or fill out the contact form on the page above.
